The Scientific Expedition Group Inc. is a non-profit organisation which aims:

  • to promote and run expeditions of a scientific, cultural and adventurous nature.
  • to encourage knowledge and appreciation of the natural environment.
  • to promote the values and philosophies of wilderness to develop skills required for competent field work
  • to develop interpersonal skills by living and working towards a common goal.

The Scientific Expedition Group Inc. was established in 1984 and is a volunteer, non profit organisation, relying on contributions and membership fees to organise and run expeditions and to produce the SEGments newsletter. Management of SEG is by a committee.

Each expedition is organised by an expedition sub-committee established for the purpose.


Many private individuals, organisations and government departments have provided logistical and financial support for expeditions. Contributors and sponsors are acknowledged in the expedition reports.

SEG Foundation

The SEG Foundation has been established to provide a funding base for major scientific projects. The Foundation is recognised under S. 79 (1) (a) of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 for the purpose of tax deductions for donations. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Membership is open to individuals, families and organisations. Members come from diverse backgrounds, both scientific and non-scientific, and contribute a wide range of skills, experience and knowledge.

SEG members receive the quarterly newsletter SEGments, expedition notices and have priority for joining expeditions. Members are encouraged to be involved at various levels of the organisation including the committee, expedition planning and leadership.

The annual meeting is held each September or October and one or two joint meetings with related organisations may be held each year, however, there are no regular meetings.

Membership period is from 1st July to 30th June each year.
